Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)
Who has to take FMCSA’s entry-level driver training, what it covers, and where it fits between your permit and your test.
CDL Permit Test · How to Get a CDL
Who needs ELDT?
Anyone getting a Class A or B CDL for the first time, or upgrading to one, and anyone getting the passenger (P), school bus (S) or hazmat (H) endorsement for the first time.
Not if you got that CDL or endorsement before February 7, 2022, or got your permit before then and get your CDL before it runs out. Military drivers whose skills test is waived don’t need it either.
49 CFR 380.603 and 380.609.
What does ELDT cover?
Theory for each, and behind-the-wheel training for all but hazmat.
| Training for | Theory | Behind the wheel |
|---|---|---|
| Class A | Yes | On a range and on public roads |
| Class B | Yes | On a range and on public roads |
| Passenger (P) | Yes | Yes |
| School bus (S) | Yes | Yes |
| Hazmat (H) | Yes | No |
Appendices A to E of 49 CFR part 380.
How many hours is ELDT?
The rules set no minimum. Your provider must cover every topic and your instructor must see you do every driving skill. You need 80% on the theory test.
Appendices A to E of 49 CFR part 380, and 380.715.
Can I do ELDT online?
The theory part, yes. Behind-the-wheel training must be in a real vehicle of the right kind: a simulator doesn’t count.
49 CFR 380.605 and appendices A to D of part 380.
When do I take ELDT?
Before your skills test, or before the hazmat knowledge test. Finish the theory and behind-the-wheel parts within a year of finishing the first of them.
Your provider reports it to FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry by midnight of the second business day after you finish.
49 CFR 383.71(b)(11), 380.603(c)(3) and 380.717.
Does practicing here count as ELDT?
No. CDLPracticeQuiz is practice for the knowledge tests, not a training provider on FMCSA’s registry.
