Which tests are on the permit?
Every permit needs the general knowledge test for the vehicle you’ll drive. With air brakes you also take the air brakes test, and for Class A the combination vehicles test.
You can add the passenger (P), school bus (S) and tank (N) endorsements to a permit by passing their tests. Hazmat and doubles and triples wait for your CDL.
| License | Tests |
|---|---|
| Class A | General knowledge, air brakes, combination vehicles |
| Class B | General knowledge, air brakes |
49 CFR 383.25(a)(3) and (5), 383.93(a)(2) and 383.95(a).
What can I do with a permit?
Drive a commercial vehicle on public roads, but only with a CDL holder for that vehicle beside you, or right behind you in a bus. You also need your regular driver’s license from the same state, and you can’t carry hazmat.
With P or S you can’t carry passengers other than examiners, inspectors and other trainees. With N you may drive only an empty tank, cleaned of any hazmat it held.
49 CFR 383.25(a).
How long until the skills test?
At least 14 days after your permit is issued. The permit lasts up to a year; after that you take the knowledge tests again.
49 CFR 383.25(c) and (e).
What score do I need?
80% on each test: 40 of 50 on general knowledge, 20 of 25 on air brakes and 16 of 20 on combination vehicles. You must be 18 or over for a permit.
49 CFR 383.135(a) and 383.25(a)(4).
